DMDM hydantoin In your shampoo?

Class. Action. Lawsuit.

Whenever I see these words I'm intrigued to learn more...

Once again a major company has come under investigation for misleading marketing and using harmful ingredients (that is clearly stated on the label). Tresemme, owned by Unilever, has had a lawsuit filed against them by a consumer claiming that her hair began to fall out after using their Keratin Hair-smoothing Shampoo.

Let's take a look at that ingredient list of the Keratin Hair-smoothing Shampoo....

Water (Aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Dimethiconol, Fragrance (Parfum), Glycol Distearate, Carbomer, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, TEA-Dodecylbenzenesulfonate, Citric Acid, PPG-9, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, PEG-45M, Sodium Benzoate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Cocamide MEA, Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)

What is DMDM hydantoin?

It is an ingredient that is a formaldehyde-releasing antimicrobial preserving agent.

Yep, you read that right...this ingredient releases formaldehyde, right into the shampoo... that you are then putting right on your scalp.

So what's the concern with formaldehyde?

•Applying products containing carcinogens directly to our skin (our largest organ) can lead to very toxic effects on our bodies and increases our body burden.

•Formaldehyde is recognized as a human carcinogen by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer).

Other dangerous ingredients on that label…

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Fragrance

Disodium EDTA

PPG-9

PEG-45M

Methylisothiazolinone

Methylchloroisothiazolinone
